Thank you to all our sponsors for your generosity. The course was in fantastic condition for the week, and this was commented on many times by visitors to the club. Well done to James and the team. Gorey Guardian Summer Series continues every Wednesday and some great scores have been recorded to date. Don’t forget the Open Ladies and Gents Singles the first Thursday of the month, and the new 9 to Fivers on Thursday evenings is up and running. Nine and Dine Any Combination Fourball will continue for the Summer on most Friday evenings and is great value at €15 for members and €25 for visitors for 9 holes and a main course. Start the weekend with golf and Dinner in Courtown …….. Sunday 10th July is an Invitation 2 Person Team Competition, kindly sponsored by Mossel Bay. This is our annual Teams Classic and entry is €10 p.p. and €25 for visitors. We remind you that if for some reason you must take your name off the timesheet, would you please contact your playing partners as soon as possible to give them time to organise opposition. This particularly applies to a fourball competition. We are currently working with Clubnet to close the time sheet at 6:00pm the day prior to play. We will keep you informed of any changes made to the booking system. We have increased our booking time with Clubnet, so you now have two minutes to enter the names and save the booking. You will have noticed some trees in spinneys marked with blue tape. When the spinneys were planted, they were overplanted to ensure a good strike rate and some of them need to be thinned out. Following a course walk, it was decided to mark the trees for removal, and the decision was made based on which trees had the best opportunity to survive, condition of the trees and density of tree growth preventing the progression of the ball towards the fairway or green. It is hoped to start this work during the Autumn. Any young trees that may be removed will be replanted in other more suitable locations. It is hoped to commence the painting of the exterior of the clubhouse in the next few weeks, (weather permitting). It was great to see so many of you using the patio area during the recent sunny spell. Let’s hope the sunshine returns shortly! Teams We still have some teams in the Inter Club matches. Well done to all who participated or played on a team. Still going strong are the Men's Barton Cup Team and Men’s All Ireland Fourball. Ladies Challenge Cup Team and Ladies Revive Active Fourball are flying the flag for the Ladies. Ladies Revive Fourball beat Tullamore on Friday 1st July and are now through to the Semi-Finals. Barton Cup play Greystones on Sunday 10th July and Ladies Challenge Team play Rathdowney also on Sunday 10th. The Men’s Fourball are also out on Sunday 10th against Waterford. Your support would be appreciated by the teams. Bar and Catering The Bar is open every day from 12 midday with closing time dependent on patronage. Mossel Bay hours are on the Notice Boards, with weekend booking for Dinner or Sunday Lunch advisable. Other News Congratulations to Mike Beetlestone who has just published his novel, ‘Finding Santeria, Losing Sanity’. The book is available to purchase on Amazon or Kindle Amazon.co.uk : finding santeria... losing sanity You may be aware of a new 18-month membership offer currently available to new members only. If you know anyone that may be interested, please encourage them to join. The Horizon Irish Open comes to us from Mount Juliet this weekend, and with some of the big names in golf competing, it should be a great four days of golf. Best of luck to our own Irish golfers. Rules Refresher Pace of Play Clubnet has introduced a pace of play tracker on the app. Golf Rule; Relief from Movable Obstruction Removal of Movable Obstruction. You may remove a movable obstruction without penalty anywhere on or off the course and may do so in any way. If your ball moves while you are removing a movable obstruction, there is no penalty and your ball must be replaced on its original spot (which if not known must be estimated) DIAGRAM #1 15.2a: BALL MOVES WHEN MOVABLE OBSTRUCTION REMOVED (EXCEPT WHEN BALL IN OR ON OBSTRUCTION)
But there are two exceptions when movable obstruction cannot be removed: Exception 1 - Tee Markers Must Not be Moved When Ball Will Be Played from Teeing Area. Exception 2 - Restrictions on Deliberately Removing Movable Obstruction to Affect a Ball in Motion. See The R&A - Rules Of Golf (randa.org) for more information on the Exceptions.

Bobby Kinsella Retirement The Management Committee wish to advise that Bobby Kinsella has retired after 62 years association with Courtown Golf Club. Bobby joined the club as a member in 1960. Bobby playing off a very respectable 5 handicap represented the club on many occasions. He joined the staff of the club in 2000 serving a number of roles but will always be fondly remembered as our affable course ranger. While sometimes, play was delayed, we could look forward to the latest series of jokes or witty incidents. Bobby often entertained us in the clubhouse and what fun we had … Remember his best man role to Pat Noonan (groom) at our mock weddings…great fun and great memories. Thanks, Bobby, for all the laughs, the fun and the good times. Missing you already. Sponsored by FloGas Friday 10th; Open Nine and Dine Many thanks to our very generous sponsors Clubhouse You will have noticed the trophy cabinet in the clubhouse…………… Liz Harte Interior Design was engaged at a high level to discuss what could be done to freshen up the upstairs area. While there is no plan in place to renovate the bar area, it is thought that some small works could be carried out to improve the overall appearance. It is thought that the removal of some of the trophy cabinet would open up the restaurant area and give a brighter effect. To this end, the trophies have been stored, the doors removed from the restaurant along with the cabinet shelves and cabinet doors, on the kitchen side, to give the membership and idea of what the final product will look like. As only doors and shelves have been removed it is completely reversible. The next step would be to take out the cabinets leaving four symmetrical openings the size of the existing doorways. The reaction so far has generally been positive. There have been some queries around relocating the trophy cabinet and losing the privacy of the restaurant for smaller functions. There are a few suitable locations for a trophy cabinet and movable partitions can be made to screen off the restaurant, if required. The benefit of the plan is the sense of airiness and brightness and it will be a big benefit of our major nights, Captains and President’s. It will also accommodate some of our larger societies on their big nights in August & September. A final decision will be made in the coming week or two. You will also have noticed the new linings in the carpark and the clear definition of the one way system that is in place, which we would ask you to observe. Course Information The Fox Family who resides at the side of the 8th!!! On the course the area between the 7th green and 8th tee box has been planted with wildflowers. We look forward to the colour there for the summer months. Are you one of the 10% that do not repair divots, pitch marks or rake bunkers? NOW is the time to join the 90%. The greenkeepers, committees and members are extremely concerned with the damage being done to the course by some individuals who think it is okay to hit several balls from the same spot. It is not okay, and members found damaging the course in this manner will face sanction. “Adopt a Green” In an effort to maintain our greens we are re-introducing Adopt a Green. The initial of your surname determines which green that you could check out and repair, if needed, as you play your round of golf. The following table shows your designated green! A for 1st green B for 2nd green C for 3rd green D for 4th green E for 5th green F for 6th green G for 7th green H for 8th green I & J for 9th green K for 10th green L for 11th green M for 12th green N for 13th green O for 14th green P, Q & R for 15th green S & T for 16th green U & V for 17th green W &Y for 18th green Notice – Nominations Committee The Nominations Committee wish to inform the membership of the impending vacancy in the role of Chair of the Club Management Committee, established by the new constitution adopted by the members in general meeting. This position, currently held by Mr Vincent Kearney, is a most significant one in the club organisation, carrying responsibility for overseeing the business affairs of the club. Expressions of interest are being sought from members who may feel that they have the necessary expertise to fulfil the role and are willing to serve for a minimum term of two years. Such expressions, which will be treated in strictest confidence, may be submitted by emailing cgc.nominations@gmail.com or contacting a member of the Nominations committee. Let’s hope Mr Fox doesn’t meet them! There will be a Golf Taster evening on Monday 9th May in the club, so if you know of anyone who may be interested in this please give the name to the office. There are a number of loose trolleys in the trolley shed, and as the trolley shed is for authorised users only, we ask that if you own one of these to remove it. The loose trolleys will be removed by 6th May if they are not claimed. We would like to remind you that if you have to take your name off the time sheet for any reason, to please contact your intended playing partners as a matter of courtesy and allow them to organise markers. A reminder also, to observe the Pace of Play Policy for the comfort of all players on the course. We will start line marking of the car park this Friday 29th April, and as there are still some buggies in the car park we will need them removed to facilitate this work. If you own one of these buggies, could you please either move it or collect it. James and the Greenkeeping staff are doing a terrific job in maintaining the course, and you will all agree that it looks really great at the moment. Why not help to keep it that way by replacing and repairing your divots on the fairways and fixing your pitch marks on the greens. The bunkers must be raked after use…… you all know what it’s like for your ball to land in a big footprint in the sand!!!! Congratulations to all our Junior and not so Junior members who recently took part in the Gorey Musical “The Sound of Music”. Rules of Golf Night (with Lucy Healy) Give Golf A Go Voucher We have introduced a 'Give Golf a Go' Voucher. This Voucher is aimed at beginners and those who want to take up golf. We have noticed that it can be difficult and expensive for beginners to take up the game of golf. This can be off-putting especially for beginners who may be unsure if they are going to like the game. We have created the 'Give Golf a Go' Voucher for Men and Ladies. This is seen as an introduction to golf at Courtown Golf Club. You get a lesson with the club Pro, a session on the Trackman studio and 3 Group practice sessions. We see this as an opportunity to meet others who are taking up the game in group practice sessions and as a way of getting to know potential playing partners. You also get 3 green fees to experience the course and learn the game. This is excellent value at €150 and could make for a great gift. If you subsequently decide to join Courtown Golf Club, €150 paid will be discounted from your membership subscription. Full details of these offers are available on the www.CourtownGolfClub.com website and Facebook, Or email us at: info@courtowngolfclub.com Telephone 053 94 25166 Ext: 2 New Membership offers for 2022
We would like to introduce you to some of the new membership offers that we have for 2022. Over the winter we analysed the age profile of our membership and we found that less than 20% of our membership was aged under 50. Based on this we have decided to expand our previous under 35 membership offer for new members to under 45 for Ladies and under 40 for Men. We have done this based on the numbers in each category, and to encourage young people into the club. This will hopefully ensure that we have a vibrant club well into the future. If you know of anybody who may be interested in these offers please share this with them. These offers are available to new members only. For more information you can phone the club on 053-9425166 or visit the website www.courtowngolfclub.com ![]() Newsletter 15th March 2022 No.5 The Captains Drive In 2022 proceeded last Saturday much to everyone’s delight, and while the weather wasn’t favourable, the large number of members there certainly made up for the lack of sunshine. Despite torrential rain during the week the course was playable, thanks to our hard-working greens staff. Captain Adrian and Lady Captain Mary arrived on vintage motor bikes, despite a little hitch when Adrian’s bike refused to behave, but some good old fashioned ‘mechanical work’ from Jim French soon had him up and running again. The problem was solved, and they expertly puttered their way through the large crowd that had gathered to welcome them. The Captains were introduced on the tee by our President Noel in his own inimitable style… Lady Captain Mary went first and sent the ball down the centre of the fairway (much to her own relief) and Captain Adrian followed with a massive drive that almost made the green, but unfortunately, the ball was never seen again! Our Junior Captains Theodora and Andrew then teed off in style. They planted a tree in honour of the occasion, before playing a 9-hole mixed scramble. There was delicious food, drink, and craic in the Bar after golf, and the day was even better when Ireland had a good win by beating England in Twickenham. Thank you to the caterers, card checkers and all involved in organising the day. ![]() The Captains were introduced on the tee by our President Noel in his own inimitable style… Lady Captain Mary went first and sent the ball down the centre of the fairway (much to her own relief) and Captain Adrian followed with a massive drive that almost made the green, but unfortunately, the ball was never seen again! Our junior golf season will soon get underway! A full schedule of golf coaching and competitions is being planned from late March / early April, through the summer months and beyond. The junior program in Courtown aims to cater for juniors of all ages (from 7 up) and abilities. Our junior cadets coaching is geared towards our younger junior members. These coaching sessions will begin in early April and will continue through the summer months. Cadet’s coaching will be delivered by the Club pro with support from junior committee members and some parents / guardians. The cadets program also includes an element of on-course practice and the plan is to run Golf Sixes competitions during the summer but keeping the emphasis more on fun than competition. Separate coaching sessions are run for our older juniors. These sessions will also be delivered by the Club Pro. Some of the younger junior cohort of more advanced golfing ability may also be considered for these coaching sessions. Our older juniors will also be given access to the club’s new golf simulator. A full schedule of junior competitions will also be arranged, and details published shortly. The schedule will include 9-hole competitions for juniors who are competing for the first time. Finally, the club have entered teams for Boys U-15 and U-18 interclub competitions, and an U-18 Girls team. We wish them the best of luck!! Our junior members are the lifeblood and future of the club, and we want to do all we can to encourage their participation in the game and ensure they enjoy it. At the E.G.M. held in October 2021 a revised Constitution was approved by the members. This included the formation of a Nominations Committee to assist with the recruitment of members to the Management Committee to fill any vacancies that may arise. The role of the Nominations Committee is to seek suitable candidates with the right skills to fill any specific role on the Management Committee. The Nominations Committee was chosen by the Men’s Committee, Ladies Committee, Management Committee and Trustees. The following members kindly agreed to serve on the Nominations Committee; Patsy Asple Proposed by Trustees Michael Carty Proposed by Men’s Committee Alan Gray Proposed by Management Committee Denise Kavanagh Proposed by Management Committee Kate Sheehan Proposed by Ladies Committee Following their first meeting in January, Patsy Asple was elected Chairperson. As this is a newly formed committee, we wish them well in their endeavours. Just to reiterate what was advised at the E.G.M. and is written into the Revised Constitution, this new way of introducing potential members for election to Management Committee does not exclude any full member from putting their name forward (along with a proposer and seconder) for election at an A.G.M. The Bungalow Project / Simulator Room The Bungalow project is complete and the golf simulator is now available to our membership. Booking can be made firstly through the Pro-Shop or then through the office. For members who have prepaid for vouchers, they are available for collection in the office. The facility requires to be opened, set up and locked up, therefore available times will be condensed to ensure someone is available to carry out these functions as well as assist you with a demonstration. Our club professionals have priority over the facility up to 3:00 p.m. after which priority reverts to the membership but may be used prior to 3:00 p.m. at short notice by members subject to availability. ● Available to members only and their guests ● Cost is €30 per hour (introductory offer, reduced by 25% from €40) and the rate is regardless of the number of individuals. ● Must be pre-booked at least 24 hours in advance to ensure availability of staff ● New balls must be used, and clubs must be clean to maintain our screen in good condition. Balls with coloured markings or scuff marks must not be used as they will damage or mark the screen. Equally dirty clubs will transfer the mud to the balls and damage the screen. (The screen cost €2,500) We appreciate that the course is muddy this time of year, but there are full bathroom facilities on site and you can wet your towel to clean your clubs. ● Please be aware that the facility is monitored by 6 CCTV cameras with activity recorded ● Times available are between the hours of 3:00 pm to closing at 9:00 pm daily with the exception of Tuesday and Saturday evenings. Times will be reviewed on an ongoing basis ● The facility is currently being used by our Pro’s and is an excellent facility for golf lessons which you can book in the usual way, in the Pro-Shop. A final thank you to our small army of volunteers who made this project a reality! Messgage from our Professionals As we approach nearly 4 years at Courtown Golf Club, we in the pro-shop are really excited to be able to offer the members access to our new Trackman golf studio. The new studio will allow us to offer coaching and custom fitting all year round and should give all members the perfect opportunity to reach their full potential, either through golf lessons or that new set of irons or driver you have been promising yourself. With Spring/Summer just around the corner, we are starting to take delivery of the new ranges of shoes and clothing. We note a number of unallocated trolleys in the trolley shed. As this is a paid for facility, we respectively ask that only members who have paid for a designated bay use the trolley shed. For the safety and comfort of our members, who pay for the facility, please ensure trolleys are secured with a chain and padlock in your numbered bay. As floor space is limited in the trolley shed, we ask that all unauthorised trolleys be removed. Some bays have no name on them. It would help us, if you have one of those bays, to call into the office to let us know your number, for our records. We are currently investigating the possibility of issuing identifying labels for trolleys and will keep you advised. Thank you in advance for your co-operation. Mary Osborne Hon. Secretary December 2021 Newsletter. As 2021 draws to a close the Ladies, Men's and Club AGM's have taken place. Men's Captain and Lady Captain are automatically on this committee for the tenure of their office. Junior Captains are Andrew Smith and Theodora Lande. Best wishes to you all for 2022. As previously advised locker charges will be reinstated. There will be a €20 annual charge per locker, and this will be included on your invoice along with trolley shed fee €10 and buggy park fee €25 per year where applicable. We are aware that some members purchased their lockers more than 20 years ago and we would ask that these members inform the office and complete a simple form confirming this, for record purposes for future committees. "Inherited lockers" will be subject to this charge. The buggy park is nearing completion, but in the meantime, could you please continue to park your buggy in the car park. All buggy owners will receive a letter when the buggy park is ready with their buggy park number and terms and conditions of parking in the park and use of buggies on the course. There was agreement at the Club AGM, that the Committees would tackle the issue of slow play, and you will be kept informed of any decisions taken to alleviate this. Invoices for subscriptions will issue next week. Social prepayment charges are not being retained by the club this year, as agreed. In advance of this funds presently in the bar levy purse will be transferred to the food levy purse for ease of future administration of the bar levy. As always, the food levy purse can be used in the bar. We are nearing the shortest day of the year, but there is still enough daylight to fit in a few holes of golf. The greens are in great condition thanks to the Greens staff and there are competitions as usual every weekend and Tuesday's and Wednesday's. There are a number of lost and found clubs in the trolley shed so please have a look to see if any of them belong to you. There are only a few days left to do so, and then the leftover clubs will go to recycling. Don't forget to collect your Christmas Fare prizes from the office. Mary Osborne Hon. Secretary Marked and numbered buggy parking bays should be completed in the next week. The club will issue numbered bumper stickers which will correspond to your allocated parking space. Please note, appropriate insurance is and will be required to operate and store buggies in Courtown Golf Club. |
