![]() Newsletter 15th March 2022 No.5 The Captains Drive In 2022 proceeded last Saturday much to everyone’s delight, and while the weather wasn’t favourable, the large number of members there certainly made up for the lack of sunshine. Despite torrential rain during the week the course was playable, thanks to our hard-working greens staff. Captain Adrian and Lady Captain Mary arrived on vintage motor bikes, despite a little hitch when Adrian’s bike refused to behave, but some good old fashioned ‘mechanical work’ from Jim French soon had him up and running again. The problem was solved, and they expertly puttered their way through the large crowd that had gathered to welcome them. The Captains were introduced on the tee by our President Noel in his own inimitable style… Lady Captain Mary went first and sent the ball down the centre of the fairway (much to her own relief) and Captain Adrian followed with a massive drive that almost made the green, but unfortunately, the ball was never seen again! Our Junior Captains Theodora and Andrew then teed off in style. They planted a tree in honour of the occasion, before playing a 9-hole mixed scramble. There was delicious food, drink, and craic in the Bar after golf, and the day was even better when Ireland had a good win by beating England in Twickenham. Thank you to the caterers, card checkers and all involved in organising the day. ![]() The Captains were introduced on the tee by our President Noel in his own inimitable style… Lady Captain Mary went first and sent the ball down the centre of the fairway (much to her own relief) and Captain Adrian followed with a massive drive that almost made the green, but unfortunately, the ball was never seen again! Our junior golf season will soon get underway! A full schedule of golf coaching and competitions is being planned from late March / early April, through the summer months and beyond. The junior program in Courtown aims to cater for juniors of all ages (from 7 up) and abilities. Our junior cadets coaching is geared towards our younger junior members. These coaching sessions will begin in early April and will continue through the summer months. Cadet’s coaching will be delivered by the Club pro with support from junior committee members and some parents / guardians. The cadets program also includes an element of on-course practice and the plan is to run Golf Sixes competitions during the summer but keeping the emphasis more on fun than competition. Separate coaching sessions are run for our older juniors. These sessions will also be delivered by the Club Pro. Some of the younger junior cohort of more advanced golfing ability may also be considered for these coaching sessions. Our older juniors will also be given access to the club’s new golf simulator. A full schedule of junior competitions will also be arranged, and details published shortly. The schedule will include 9-hole competitions for juniors who are competing for the first time. Finally, the club have entered teams for Boys U-15 and U-18 interclub competitions, and an U-18 Girls team. We wish them the best of luck!! Our junior members are the lifeblood and future of the club, and we want to do all we can to encourage their participation in the game and ensure they enjoy it. Here’s looking forward to a great year of golf in 2022! *La Fheile Padraig shona duit *
