HANDICAP UPDATES October 2021
  • The preferred lies period in Ireland runs from 1st November to 31st March. However, with the arrival of “winter golf” in our club and, in particular, the change to placing in the rough so as to protect the course, WHS rules dictate that the course can no longer be considered to be in an “Acceptable Score” condition from a handicap point of view. Therefore, neither competition scores nor general play scores can be recorded for handicaps for the time being. The functionality that allows players to record general play scores on the Golf Ireland app has been turned off for Courtown. Members may of course record scores played at other courses that retain Acceptable Score conditions.

  • The annual WHS Handicap Review process will be completed by the Handicap Committees over the next few weeks. This activity takes place to ensure that a player’s Handicap Index reflects their demonstrated ability. Any change to an index will be communicated to individual members in advance of the change being applied. A copy of the Handicap Appeals Procedure is available at www.golfireland.ie/handicap-system.

This seem a bit excessive and not sure why it is required in Courtown and not in the rest of the clubs. Certainly all club competitions should have placing on fairways only and have the new restrictions confined to casual golf. it is only fair the a persons handicap reflect how they are playing over the winter as well as the rest of the year!!
